Miking the Hi-Hats

A small diaphragm condenser mic will do best with hi-hats. Position it at the edge of the cymbals, about four inches above, slightly pointing inward. This gives a more washy sound if you favor the slightly-open hats technique (achieved by controlling foot pressure on the pedal). For more stick definition (for closed hats), place the mic pointing directly down a few inches toward the bell of the hats.
